Clinical Biochemistry at the Blackfriars Hub

The Blood Sciences Biochemistry Laboratory at the new Blackfriars Hub is located within one of the largest purpose‑built pathology facilities in the UK. The hub has been designed as part of Synnovis’ transformation of pathology services across south‑east London, bringing together cutting‑edge automation, modern digital systems and high‑throughput workflows to deliver faster, more consistent biochemical testing. Its ten‑floor, state‑of‑the‑art environment supports the consolidation of routine and high‑volume work into a single optimised space, improving efficiency and supporting high‑quality patient care.

As a core component of Blood Sciences, the Biochemistry Laboratory performs a comprehensive range of routine chemistry investigations, including renal and liver function tests, electrolyte panels, glucose and lipid profiles, etc. These tests support clinicians across primary care, hospital wards, emergency departments and specialist services. The Blood Sciences department operates a vast test repertoire across Synnovis sites, led by experienced scientific teams and supported by sophisticated infrastructure to ensure a robust, consistent and clinically responsive service

The hub‑and‑spoke model underpinning Synnovis services ensures that high‑volume routine biochemistry is processed efficiently at Blackfriars, while urgent and rapid‑response testing continues within local hospital‑based “spoke” laboratories. This separation of urgent and non‑urgent workstream enhances turnaround times, reduces bottlenecks and improves the overall quality and responsiveness of diagnostic services. It also allows emergency and inpatient requests to be prioritised appropriately while maintaining smooth, scalable workflows for routine testing

The Biochemistry Laboratory’s scientific and technical teams—comprising biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and quality specialists—are dedicated to maintaining high analytical standards and reliable performance across all instruments and processes. Supported by automation, continuous quality monitoring and digital reporting systems, they deliver accurate, timely results that clinicians can rely on for safe and effective decision‑making. The hub’s modern environment also enhances staff development, training and collaboration, contributing to a resilient and forward‑looking diagnostic service for the region

Blood Sciences Chemistry Laboratory is a UKAS‑accredited medical laboratory (No. 8710), accredited to ISO 15189:2022 for the tests listed in the schedule of accreditation available on the UKAS website
