Haematology Laboratory at the Blackfriar's Hub
The Haematology and Coagulation Laboratory at the new Blackfriars Hub operates within one of the UK’s largest purpose‑built pathology facilities, created to deliver a modern, efficient and technology‑enhanced diagnostic service for south‑east London. This ten‑floor, state‑of‑the‑art environment has been developed as part of Synnovis’ transformation programme, consolidating high‑volume testing into a single advanced centre equipped with automation, digital tools and high‑throughput systems that enhance speed, reliability and consistency of patient results.
As part of Synnovis’ integrated Blood Sciences department, the laboratory performs the full range of routine and specialist haematology investigations. This includes screening for anaemia, full blood counts, film reviews, red cell diagnostics, molecular haemoglobinopathy analysis and flow cytometry/immunophenotyping, supporting complex haematological conditions and cancer pathways across the region. These specialist haematology services are embedded within a collaborative network spanning multiple hospital sites, ensuring clinicians have ready access to expert interpretation and advanced investigations
The Coagulation (Haemostasis & Thrombosis) service at the Blackfriars Hub delivers a comprehensive range of routine coagulation assays that support the investigation and management of bleeding disorders, clotting abnormalities, anticoagulant monitoring and pre‑operative assessment. The hub performs all core coagulation testing, including Prothrombin Time (PT), INR, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT), APTT ratio, fibrinogen, D‑dimer, INR/APTT 50:50 correction studies, Reptilase time etc. These assays form an essential part of acute and routine clinical pathways, supporting emergency care, inpatient decision‑making, anticoagulant therapy monitoring and the investigation of suspected coagulation defects. The service is delivered by experienced biomedical scientists using modern analytical platforms designed for high‑volume, high‑accuracy coagulation testing, ensuring clinicians receive timely and reliable results to guide safe and effective patient care.
Central to the hub’s design is Synnovis’ hub‑and‑spoke operating model, which separates urgent from non‑urgent testing to deliver faster turnaround times and improved patient care. While large‑scale haematology and coagulation workloads are processed at the Blackfriars Hub, urgent and rapid‑response testing continues at on‑site “spoke” hospital laboratories to ensure timely diagnostics for emergency care and inpatients. This model enhances both resilience and efficiency across the entire network.
The Haematology and Coagulation Laboratory is staffed by expert biomedical scientists, clinical team and quality specialists, all committed to delivering high‑quality, safe and reliable diagnostics. Supported by digital innovation, modern automation and robust quality frameworks, the lab ensures clinicians receive timely, accurate and clinically meaningful results. This integrated and modern approach strengthens haematology and coagulation services across the region, contributing to improved patient outcomes and a more responsive, efficient diagnostic pathway.
Blood Sciences Haematology Laboratory is a UKAS‑accredited medical laboratory (No. 9092), accredited to ISO 15189:2022 for the tests listed in the schedule of accreditation available on the UKAS website
