Microbiology at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals

Microbiology at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals

Laboratory overview

The Royal Brompton and Harefield Essential Service Laboratories (ESLs) provide integrated, rapid Infection Sciences support for both hospitals’ specialist cardiothoracic, respiratory and transplant services. Together, the two sites deliver timely microbiology and virology diagnostics that are critical for managing high‑risk and complex patient pathways.

Both laboratories operate the BD Bactec FX system for continuous blood culture monitoring, enabling early detection of clinically significant bacteria and fungi. Testing covers blood and a range of sterile body fluids including ascitic fluid, joint aspirates, peritoneal dialysis fluid, pleural fluid and pericardial fluid, supporting prompt management of serious infections.

Royal Brompton and Harefield also provide Cepheid GeneXpert molecular testing for key respiratory viruses. Using nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, the service offers rapid, qualitative detection of Influenza A, Influenza B, RSV, and SARS‑CoV‑2, ensuring fast clinical turnaround for acute respiratory presentations.

Both sites work in close partnership with the central Infection Sciences Hub for complex microbiology, virology, sequencing, and advanced molecular investigations. This integrated model ensures seamless escalation, specialist interpretation, and comprehensive diagnostic coverage across the Synnovis network.

For full accreditation details and access to the  User Handbook, please refer to the Hub page.
