SE-HMDS Immunophenotyping Laboratory at King's College Hospital

Laboratory overview

The Immunophenotyping Laboratory at King College Hospital is an integral part of the South East Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SE-HMDS).

We provide a comprehensive flow cytometry service, providing a spectrum of tests for the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of haematological malignancies.  Specialised tests include integrated MDS flow scoring, highly sensitive measurable residual disease monitoring and monocyte subset analysis. Results support the integrated HMDS reporting as recommended by the NICE guideline for ‘Haematological cancers: improving outcomes’.

The department also provides paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) analysis and monitoring for the national PNH service based at Kings College Hospital and is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory (No. 9092) to ISO15189:2022

The service is supported by dedicated quality and clinical teams to ensure the highest standards at all stages of the diagnostic pathway.  The laboratory is staffed by specialist biomedical and clinical scientists, assisted by highly skilled support staff with significant expertise in complex next generation flow cytometry.

Key features:

  • 8-13 colour flow cytometry
  • Next generation flow cytometry
  • MRD4-MRD5 sensitivity MRD using LAIP and ‘difference from normal’ strategies.
  • Integrated reporting
  • Clinically urgent cases reported within 1 working day
  • Specialist expertise
