New Blood Culture Bottles
Important information for sepsis leads and infection control teams at KCH Denmark Hill and Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).
The programme to transform pathology services across south east London is approaching a key milestone – the opening of our hub laboratory. One of Synnovis’ key transformational commitments is the introduction of cutting-edge technology, including new blood culture analysers.
As part of our investment in pathology services in south east London, we are replacing the current blood culture analysers (Biomerieux) with BD BACTEC™ FX analysers. As a result, we need to change the type of blood culture sample bottles used to ensure compatibility with the new BD BACTEC™ instrumentation.
While the way you order tests and see results will remain the same, the blood culture sample collection bottles will change. The new bottles have narrower necks, allowing the collection tube to fit the bottle without needing an adaptor. There are no vacutainers with the new bottles.
Existing bottles will be replaced on go-live day by BD colleagues, after which only the BD bottles should be used.
All old bottles will be removed at this stage, so that they are no longer available to use.
Information on the new analysers
The new BD BACTEC™ FX analysers will mean all blood culture samples, across all hospital sites in the Synnovis network, will be managed by the same system. The analysers will be connected using BD Synapsys middleware. The analysers and middleware also feature an audible and visual alarm function, which enables faster identification of positive samples.
The new analysers, together with the new blood culture sample collection bottles, will bring quality improvements including blood volume monitoring, an increase in the number of blood sets collected and better tracking capabilities for contamination rate.
As blood culture processing needs to begin within four hours of a sample being taken, the new analysers will be located at the Essential Services Laboratories (ESLs) on each hospital site. If a sample tests positive, it will then be transported to the hub for further processing.
Find out more
There will be opportunities to speak to Synnovis and BD colleagues in the coming months. We will be hosting pop-up stands on hospital sites, attending departmental meetings and hosting an online drop-in session. Details will be shared in future issues of In SYNc.
You may have questions about these changes and we encourage you to email them to us at LetsTalk@synnovis.co.uk
We are keen to ensure our communications tactics and messaging are effective, so please use this email address to tell us what we’re getting right, as well as how we might improve. Thank you.
