Laboratory overview

The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) ESL provides essential microbiology and virology diagnostics to support urgent patient care. Blood culture testing is performed on the BD Bactec FX system, enabling immediate processing and rapid detection of bacterial and fungal pathogens.

PRUH also offers Cepheid GeneXpert testing for gastrointestinal viruses using stool samples, providing fast qualitative detection of Norovirus genogroup I and II RNA.Specialist microbiology, virology and sequencing investigations are supported by the central Infection Sciences Hub.
