Virology Laboratory at King's College Hospital
Laboratory overview
Kings Denmark Hill site provides a range of on‑site serology testing using the Abbott Alinity I platform . This includes HIV, hepatitis A, B and C markers, HTLV I/II, and CMV IgG. These assays support urgent donor screening
Furthermore, there is a Sequencing service that provides specialist molecular and sequencing diagnostics, supporting complex viral investigations across the Synnovis network. Using the ABI 3730xl DNA Analyser, the laboratory performs a broad range of high‑level virology tests including:
• HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and protease sequencing
• HIV-1 integrase sequencing
• HIV-1 CCR5/CXCR4 tropism sequencing
• HBV genotyping and antiviral drug resistance
• HCV genotyping
These advanced sequencing services support antiviral resistance monitoring, treatment guidance, and detailed viral characterisation, in close collaboration with the central Hub and partner clinical teams
