Haematology Laboratory at Princess Royal University Hospital

Laboratory Overview

The Haematology and Coagulation Laboratory at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) delivers essential diagnostic services as part of Synnovis’ hub‑and‑spoke pathology network. PRUH operates as a spoke site, providing rapid‑turnaround core haematology and routine coagulation testing to support urgent and inpatient care for the local community. The laboratory plays a vital role in maintaining timely diagnostics for the busy acute hospital environment, ensuring clinicians have fast access to investigation results needed for effective patient management.

Core haematology testing at PRUH includes Full Blood Counts (FBCs), ESR, reticulocyte counts, blood film examinations, malaria detection, etc ,supporting a wide range of clinical specialties including acute medicine, emergency services and local haematology clinics. These routine investigations are fundamental to the diagnosis and monitoring of anaemia, infection, inflammatory conditions and haematological abnormalities.

The Coagulation service at PRUH performs essential haemostasis investigations required for the assessment of bleeding and clotting disorders, anticoagulation monitoring and peri‑operative screening. Routine coagulation tests available on site include Prothrombin Time (PT), INR, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT), fibrinogen and D‑dimer. These assays support the anticoagulation service and contribute to the evaluation and management of haemorrhagic and thrombotic conditions seen across the Trust

PRUH haematology and coagulation diagnostics are delivered by experienced biomedical scientists using established analytical platforms and robust quality systems. The laboratory provides fast, reliable results to support frontline clinical decision‑making, with more specialised or high‑complexity haematology testing processed at the central Blackfriars Hub as part of the transformed Synnovis network. This ensures that patients benefit from both rapid local testing and access to advanced specialist diagnostics through seamless integration with regional services.

PRUH clinicians also work closely with partners at King’s College Hospital (Denmark Hill) and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital as part of a regional haematology network, ensuring that patients with complex bleeding conditions, haemoglobinopathies or suspected malignancies receive coordinated, specialist-led care. The close clinical relationship across sites enhances continuity of care and ensures local patients can access specialist expertise without unnecessary travel

For accreditation details and the Blood Sciences User Handbook, users should refer to the Blackfriars Hub Haematology page, where full UKAS accreditation information for Blood Sciences is maintained.
