We love pathology!

Friday, 7 November, 2014

It is estimated that 70-80% of all diagnoses in the UK, are based on the results of tests carried out in pathology laboratories. But while pathology is core to patient care, do patients or even the healthcare community know what happens between collecting a sample and receiving a result? Viapath’s event for International Pathology Day aimed to de-mystify this essential process and recruit some future scientists along the way!

The event saw an enthusiastic team of biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and medical laboratory assistants from our Infection Sciences Department sharing their scientific expertise, goodies and give-aways, with visitors to St. Thomas’ Hospital.

There was a fantastic response from members of the public, patients and staff and we received a visit from Liz McInnes MP and Councillor Jim Dickson who found time in their busy schedules to visit and chat to our pathologists.

Dr Siobhan O’Shea is a Clinical Scientist in the Virology Laboratory within Infection Sciences at St. Thomas’ Hospital: “The day was a huge success with people really engaging with the event. Children were particularly enthusiastic enjoying the interactive activities, dressing up as scientists and looking down the microscopes.”

“We would also like to thank the Royal College of Pathologists for providing excellent support together with a photographer and resources such as pens, wristbands and ‘mini bugs’ for us to give away.”

The College was represented by Dr David Bailey, Vice President for Communication, Edward Davie, Public Affairs Officer and Samantha Jayaram, Press and Communications Manager.

Thank you to the Infection Sciences team who gave up their time to organise and run this very successful event: Asil Al-Ali, Esther Simpson, Edyta Staite, Ashwenia Krishnan, Penny Cliff, Emma Cunningham, Andrea Wilson, Siobhan O’Shea and Jerome Lock-Wah-Hoon.
